FAIRBANKS — The Alaska Nanooks added more local talent to
its swim team Wednesday when coach Scott Lemley announced North
Pole’s Denise Howard will join the Nanooks for the 2010-11
season.
Howard signed a National Letter of Intent to swim for the Nanooks
and will have four years of eligibility.
“Denise is one of our most valuable recruits this
year,” said Lemley. “She’s a sprinter and will
probably make an impact on the team right away.”
A four-year swimmer for North Pole High School, Howard was a state
qualifier in three of her four seasons with the Patriots. After
claiming Freshman of the Year 2006, she earned the team’s
Most Valuable Swimmer and Sportsmanship awards during her prep
career.
She was a member of the North Pole Aquatic Club for 10
seasons.
“We’ve struggled a bit over the years having enough
sprinters at any one time to put together a really fast freestyle
relay,” Lemley said. “Her best times of 26.20 and 56.88
will put her in contention for making our ‘A’ freestyle
relays as a freshman next season.”
Howard plans to pursue a career in sports medicine and physical
therapy.
